Only heat no light

The Christian world is so caught up on right and wrong, torn between traditionalism and new age doctrine that they have forgotten that every believer’s life is like a city on a hill – the light that is so visible to people miles away. Our lives are a living testimony to what the saving grace and transforming love of Christ could do to a person.   Think about it....... A dad playing with his little girl, wants her to put back a picture torn into pieces. After a few minutes she gets it done, a....

Forgiven

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you (Lewis B Smedes).   When you realise your mistakes, repent of them and move on with your life, you expect that life gets easier. You wish!! Actually it doesn’t. Unfortunately we live in a world that tries to memory jog God. We’re surrounded by holier than thou saints who think they know better. Once bitten twice shy is the mantra of the so called wise and non-erring people around. So are you going to be welcomed back....

Giving is worship

Give to those in need; don't hold back if it is in your power to do good to others - I was raised with such values. I never had a problem giving. I didn't mind giving at the cost of my own needs and wants. There is this feeling of satisfaction that overtakes the mind when you know you've done good. I always thought God would be smiling down at me for my good heart.    On the other hand, when my giving was inhibited, my heart was hurt. It bothered me deeply when I couldn't contribute to....

Helping God write your story

There is no better place to turn to understand the magnificence of the creator than have a glimpse of the creation. Every little thing screams glory, beauty and awe. There has never been a day when nature has been out of step. From eternity past, it has wowed us with its perfection and unimaginable intricacies. For me this has been a constant reminder of ‘The Supreme God’ whose eyes are constantly looking over me. Reading the later chapters of the book of Job, one gets to understand this one....

Fenced In

Sometimes I feel like I’ve drifted away and the voice in my heart that once was so overwhelming has become a faint whisper. It feels like treading on unfamiliar territory. The silence in my heart becomes deafening. Is this loneliness? Maybe! Did I walk away from the path I’m meant to take? I have no clue about it. The battlefield of the devil is our mind and his choicest weapons are lies. He did fill my mind with worries and doubts and questions from my past: things I thought are done away....

Gods of men

There is this beautiful verse that adorns the wall of almost every Christian home ‘As for me and my house, we’ll serve you Lord’. That’s a definite piece of God we all like to have in our homes! There is one aspect of this verse that never captures our attention at first sight though i.e. the story behind it!   I was reading this amazingly dramatic book in the Old Testament, called Joshua. It talks about how the Israelites actually entered the Promised Land. The book elaborates on their....

To love or be loved!

Most of us fall in love with people for what we lack in ourselves. We expect and imagine that this would fill up the void and the gap we see in our lives. Certainly it does, to an extent on most days. But considering the fact that there are two human minds involved here, chances are everyday is not the same. The pressures of mere survival will never allow people to remain consistent in their behavior and their expression of love. And so the strength that we draw from people we love is....

Are you forgetting someone?

We all have our own favourite people, those who have a special place in our hearts and lives. And I'm sure that we've also been recipients of this undue attention. But  have you ever noticed that most often, if not always, these special people are the ones who are most neglected? The 'special to me' tag actually puts them in a nonetheless special corner of our heart and lives that we rarely re-visit.  How many times have we ever taken the time to talk to this special person? In fact the most....

FEAR

'His eye is on the sparrow and I know he's watching over me – a quote inspired by Matthew 10:29,  is one of the most reassuring quotes that has helped me many a times to remember that I’m not alone. Research shows that as babies all of us are born with only two kinds of fears: fear of falling and fear of noise. These are believed to be incorporated into our DNA as preventive mechanism to keep us from potential danger. Research also shows that on an average every adult lives with at least 7000....

Gift of Life

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you - Psalm 63:3 For the gift of life, for family, For the choicest blessings that rest on me; For love so pure that bears me up against all odds, For grace and mercy that fall anew on me; For strength and courage that walked me through the darkest nights, For patience and loving kindness that never gave up on me; For wisdom that made simple every struggle, For trials and tribulations that made me stronger; For every storm....

Strength in Trials

Much is written and spoken about trials and difficult times. This has been my understanding and my perspective of what we call trials and difficult times. Recently I was talking to one of my friends. She was not her usual perky self and when I asked her about it, she said ‘God is putting me through challenges.’ That was a sad thing to hear. It is already a stress to have challenges and if it supposedly comes from God, I don’t know how anyone would survive that. Often times and almost always, we....

When the heart runs dry

Ever been in that span of time when it seems like the heart is losing its rhythm, drained of emotions, the mind no longer thinking, the ability to relate to the present seems to be taking forever? This could be one of the most exhaustive times because we cease to live and start existing. For me, this was literally draining the colour out of life, because I wanted to be and do right and I had to strive to get there. I read my Bible religiously, prayed every day and enjoyed Church and continued....

Deception

Deception, Rejection, Criticism are words that send chills down our spine. No matter how prepared one is, it is almost next to impossible to handle even one of these. Recently, I came across this quote ‘Problems can be a benefit, because they push you to do something different, to try something new, to improve, to be more creative, to achieve what you never thought you could.’ Sounds very motivating but does it offer any comfort? Not really! Every ‘No’ that comes our way doesn’t go without....

Thank you

He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. He shall give charge to His angels concerning you. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go, I will counsel you with my loving eye upon you. Aren’t we blessed beyond measure? Living under perfect grace that asks for nothing but a heart that believes. Yet how often do we actually pause to realise that the very breath in our nostrils is a magnificent proof of a love that knows no bounds. It’s always the little things in life that....

Conquering shadows

It is inevitable – at times it seems like sticks and stones and battered bones followed by a couple of sunshine days. There are moments of high and times when we literally feel like we are journeying through the belly of a whale, waiting to see daylight. Personally, I have learnt to throw my hands up and simply let God handle it.  Throughout the difficult times, there was one passage that kept my heart still. ‘Yet in all these things we are like more than conquerors and gain an overwhelming....

Do your best. Really?

How we all love attention? It seems to romance and elude even the most strong willed. After all we are just putting our God given talents to best use and enjoying the limelight. But little do we realize that in the zeal to fulfil our purpose and achieve dreams and plans, we end occupying a lot of space and losing peace along the way. That’s what happened with me. I was lost in doing things my way and ended up slogging and wasting all my energy trying to make things happen and keep it going. God....

Most wanted

'Most wanted' - brings to mind two kinds of people. One is the kind that has become synonymous with trouble and crimes and the other is the person of admiration and beauty, celebrities of some kind. People look out and scoot from the first and throng to get a glimpse of the other.  On the contrary, what if I'm 'most wanted' by God? It sure doesn't  mean I'm going to die and become a rose in His garden. I wish it was that easy. I've come to realize or it has been literally written on my mind....

What's in a name?

In the beginning, when God created heaven and earth and everything within it, putting man in charge of everything, did you notice that none of the animals or the trees or plants or anything had a name? Only Adam had the privilege of being christened by God. It was Adam who later named all the animals and plants and everything else under the sun.  Picture this – Adam taking a stroll with God, in the cool of the evening, looking at each animal and its characteristic features, coming up with a....

I Can and I Can't

I cannot do this, cannot live with this, not happening,…, - these are statements that we make almost every day in our lives. I’m not sure about you but I say it and think about giving up at least once a week. It is quite easy we think, to give up on something and get back to being normal and living our usual lives. But I bet and I can say this for sure that, if a person is picked to do something extraordinary, no matter what happens after that, ordinary becomes impossible and living an ordinary....

Fear - battle between the heart and mind

I was watching Rise of the guardians last weekend and there was this character Jack Frost the protagonist and Pitch, the malefactor of the story. It was a great movie and no I am not writing a review. But there was one line of thought that was central to the story that caught my attention. Fear exists, only we needn't be afraid of it. Here I am trying to draw a parallel to our lives too. Not a day goes by when I am not confronted by fear. Not the dreadful one, but the slightest worry takes up....

Sit back and relax!

Well, that sounds like a call for vacation! And undoubtedly I jumped into the luxury vehicle that took me on this journey. The start was every bit as predicted-  relaxing. Just when I was beginning to get comfortable, I was shaken up from my comfort zone. Everything seemed to get tougher - the choice I made, the aftermath of the choice, the result of it, it all did not look like it was part of a Divine plan. We are all taught from our childhood, that there can be no harm that would befall the....

Pursued

Pursued What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that thou visitest him. Ps 8:4 How often are we visited by God? Our fingers and toes would not suffice to do the counting. It is everyday of our living life that God relentlessly pursues the ones he created. Each of us are created as spirit beings even before we are given a body. Our purpose in life was written when the spirit man is envisioned by God. He then gives us a mortal body and sends us to this world to accomplish this....

In His image - living it

I'm writing this in continuation to my previous article - In His image Being created in His image - what do I do after that? I now have a new mind, I'm beginning to see things in light of this new revelation that I now have. My mind becomes of me. But I find that this new me has become a war zone of sorts. For most of the usual and natural actions of mine, there is a strong resistance within me, I fight this inner turmoil that sometimes is so overwhelming. This new person/mind who is quickened....

His image in us

God created heaven and earth and everything in it, calling out every living being into existence. He saw it and he said to Himself- it is good. He makes man in His own image, giving him His very breath, breathing him into existence - this He calls 'very good'. Kings in the past erected statues of themselves, drawing attention to themselves, revelling in their own glory, forcing people to pay obeisance to it. God, as awesome as He is created us, His people in His image, placed us in this world....

Betrayal

Et tu brutus? The phrase we all used jokingly with friends for pulling a prank on us and I guess this is the only piece of literature everyone remembers of Shakespeare. And then we have Judas Iscariot and the infamous kiss, the kiss of death - the name that has become synonymous with betrayal. Pause for a minute and think of the aftermath of both these instances. The chill that delves down the spine. What it must have been like to have been betrayed by someone we love. It could be a friend, a....

I was a brute beast

There are days when you wake up feeling ‘oh God! What’s happening in my life? Am I doing justice to what you’ve called me to? Am I still in your plan? Or have I gotten off at the wrong station??’ These questions can drive you insane in just a couple of minutes.  How do we shut off these voices? Are these voices legit questions put forth by your conscience or are they whispering of the devil only trying to bring you down? The struggle is so real. I was having one of those days. I just couldn’t....
